Special meeting of Essex County Council to discuss library cuts
An Extraordinary full meeting of Essex County Council will be held on 12th March at 10am to debate the future of Essex Libraries. The Lib Dems on Essex County Council have worked with the two other opposition groups to secure this meeting.
This follows widespread opposition to the threat of closure or downgrading of the county's 74 Libraries.
Cllr Mike Mackrory, Leader of the Opposition (LD, Springfield), is proposing the motion which would rule out any closures, encourages better use of libraries as community hubs and maximises the use of library buildings and sites to generate income.

MOTION: The Future of Essex Libraries
This Council notes:
- The overwhelming public and political opposition, including from MPs, to the closure or reduction in opening hours of any Essex Library.
- The total number of signatures on petitions, currently 57,000, which very comfortably exceeds the threshold for debate.
- This Council therefore calls on the Cabinet to rule out any such closures, and to commit to maintaining all 74 libraries by encouraging their better use as community hubs and to maximise the use of the buildings and sites to generate income for the Library Service.
